Hanover PA Real Estate: A Rich History and an Historic Survey
Although Hanover was settled in 1730 and incorporated in 1815, it was Irish nobleman John Digges who started the town with a grant of 10,000 acres in 1727. The location known as Digges Choice became the Conewego Settlement in 1730 when a group of Catholic settlers arrived.
It was around this time that the area of Hanover became part of a dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania, with both states laying claim to the city. In order to settle this conflict, the states agreed to hire British survey experts Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. Their survey would later become known as the Mason-Dixon line which was pivotal in not only ending dispute over rights of state ownership of the town, but also as a battle line during the Civil War.
